Transport and Social Exclusion Report
Back to Resource HubEvidence and insightsInclusion and accessibility
What is it?
The Transport and Social Exclusion Report explores how transport affects people’s ability to access jobs, services and opportunities across the North. It combines survey evidence and data analysis to understand travel patterns, constraints and impacts on daily life.
How is it useful?
It helps combined authorities and partners identify which groups and places face the greatest barriers. Use it to understand how travel behaviour links to access, employment and wellbeing, and to target investment, policy and business cases more effectively.
Key findings
- As of 2024, around 11.2 million people are at high risk of social exclusion due to transport
- Risk has increased since 2019, particularly in rural and coastal areas
- The North remains more affected than other regions, especially in towns and rural communities
- Key drivers include poor public transport, car dependence and affordability issues
