NTS Analytics - TfN Trip Rates

Back to Resource Hub
DatasetsMulti-modal and strategic planning

What is it?
This dataset provides trip rates developed by TfN from National Travel Survey data. It shows how many trips people make, broken down by journey purpose and user group.

How is it useful?
It helps analysts build more realistic demand into transport models by using observed trip patterns. You can use it to estimate how many trips a scheme might generate, test different scenarios and refine forecasts. This improves the accuracy of modelling and strengthens the evidence for funding business cases and investment decisions.

Limitations

NTS data is based on real-surveyed data and therefore has some limitations. The lowest geography in the data is Unitary Authority and cannot be reported any lower. Due to sample sizes the data is served across all available years and therefore shows an average. Most of the sample exists for car journies and other modes are less well represented. Very short distance active trips are often missed when users are filling out the survey (i.e. trips that are a walk to the corner shop)
