NTEM Trip Ends - Origin / destination
Back to Resource HubWhat is it?
A dataset showing how trips move between areas using NTEM origin–destination data from the Department for Transport. It maps flows between specific zones, showing where journeys start and end across different categories.
How is it useful?
Use it to understand how places are connected and how demand flows between them. It supports transport modelling and forecasting, including applying TAG-consistent growth. As a national dataset, it is best used at a strategic level and may not reflect local detail, with known limits such as underestimating rail use and overestimating car trips in the North.

Limitations
NTEM works well as a national average model but this all realises its limitations. Specfically, NTEM manages MSOA zones via area-types which can mask subtle, local changes in land use. It is also known to under-estimate rail trip counts nationally while over-estimating car trips in the North. TfN is currently working on releasing Northern-Specific national trip ends to address some of these issues
