What is it?
The EV State of Play Report reviews progress on electric vehicle charging across the North. It tracks rollout against future demand using TfN evidence and sets out where more action is needed, with clear recommendations to support a fair, sustainable transition.

How is it useful?
It helps authorities and partners understand current delivery, future infrastructure needs and investment priorities. Use it to inform local EV strategies, plan chargepoint networks and strengthen funding bids with up‑to‑date regional evidence and insight.

Key findings

  • As of December 2024, there were around 256,000 EVs and 15,600 public chargepoints in the North
  • Up to 1.9–2.6 million EVs and 178,000–240,000 chargepoints may be needed by 2030
  • An estimated £3.5bn–£4.9bn investment is required
  • Rollout is increasing but will need to accelerate to meet future demand
  • Access, affordability and consistency remain key challenges for a fair transition
