Evidence and insightsDecarbonisation

What is it?

This report explores public attitudes to the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). It looks at how people across the North understand EVs, what influences their choices and the barriers they face in switching from petrol and diesel vehicles.

It uses Northern Transport Voices, TfN’s online research community of over 500 people, who take part in surveys and discussions to share their travel experiences, needs and views.

How is it useful?

It helps combined authorities and partners understand how people respond to EV policies and infrastructure. Use it to shape local strategies, improve communication and target investment to support a fair and practical transition to zero‑emission travel.

Key findings

  • Cars and vans produce the majority of transport carbon emissions
  • Awareness of EVs is growing, but understanding and confidence vary across groups
  • Key barriers include cost, charging availability and convenience
  • Clear information and targeted support can help increase uptake and confidence
